Eat Like an Adult: What I Shared on The Mind Full Podcast w/ Dermot Whelan

Demot Whelan and Coach Josh Talk about healthy eating on The Mind Full podcast

Make it stand out

I recently sat down with Dermot Whelan on The Mind Full Podcast to talk about something I think about a lot: how to actually eat well when life is busy, messy, and full of competing priorities.

Most people don’t struggle with food because they don’t know what to eat. They struggle because they’re trying to follow systems that don’t fit their real lives. That’s the gap I wanted to speak into on this show.

What Does it Mean to ‘Eat Like an Adult’?

“Eat Like an Adult” isn’t about following a strict set of rules or cutting out entire food groups. It’s about taking responsibility for how you fuel yourself without falling into the trap of perfectionism or guilt.

For a lot of busy parents, food becomes another source of stress. You either eat “perfectly” for a few days and then fall off completely, or you feel like you’re constantly fighting with yourself about what you “should” be eating. Neither approach is sustainable.

The goal isn’t to eat perfectly. The goal is to eat like someone who’s in charge of their own health… well, most of the time.

What Actually Moves the Needle

During the episode, we talked about a few things that make a real difference:

  • Consistency over intensity. Small, repeatable habits beat short bursts of extreme effort every time.

  • Protein as a priority. Not because it’s trendy, but because it actually helps with satiety, muscle retention, and steady energy — especially when you’re busy and stressed.

  • Removing the moral value from food. Food isn’t “good” or “bad.” It’s just information. The question is whether your current patterns are helping or hurting you over time.

  • Building systems that survive real life. If your approach falls apart the moment your kids get sick or work gets crazy, it’s not a very useful system.

Why This Matters Beyond the Plate

How you eat affects how you show up in every other area of life — your training, your energy with your kids, your sleep, and your general resilience. When food becomes less of a battle, you free up mental space for everything else.

This is why I keep coming back to the same message: sustainable habits will always beat perfect ones in the long run.
