Fatherhood and Fitness: Breaking the Excuse Cycle - Ryan Fields-Spack Show

Fatherhood and Fitness: Breaking the Excuse Cycle

Fatherhood can feel like a juggling act. Work, family, health—it’s easy to let your well-being slide while managing it all. But as I shared on the Ryan Fields-Spack Podcast, the "dad bod" doesn’t have to be your story. There’s a better way to show up strong—for yourself and your family.

Here’s a recap of our conversation and practical tips to help you ditch the excuses and lead with strength.

Your Kids Are Watching
We are walking billboards for our values. Kids don’t just hear what we say—they watch how we live. Whether it’s prioritizing fitness, making better food choices, or showing resilience, we’re modeling how they’ll approach their own lives.

Avoid Rock Bottom
As I said on the podcast: “You have two choices—hit rock bottom and be forced to change, or decide to take action now.”

Start small:

  • Walk 10 minutes after each meal.

  • Prioritize protein and veggies at meals.

  • Swap sugary drinks for water.

Small steps build big momentum.

Simplify Your Approach
Forget extreme diets or brutal training plans. Fitness doesn’t have to dominate your life. Start with:

  • 2–4 workouts per week (20–30 mins).

  • Cutting back on alcohol and sugar.

  • Building meals around protein.

The basics work.

Fitness is Capability
It’s not about getting abs; it’s about being able to keep up with your kids at the playground. Ask yourself: Can I run, climb, or swing with them? If not, it’s time to change.

Presence Over Perfection
Fatherhood isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present. Start where you are, take small steps, and model the strength you want your kids to see.
