Navigating Health and Fitness as a Busy Parent - Insights from the Live Lightly Podcast

In the latest episode of the Live Lightly Podcast, I had the pleasure of discussing my journey and philosophy on health and fitness, particularly tailored for busy parents. Here’s a dive into some key takeaways from our conversation:

From Martial Arts to Health Advocacy

My story began with a passion for martial arts in my youth, which sparked an interest in health and fitness. This evolved into a career that spans from massage therapy and traditional Chinese medicine to becoming a fitness coach focused on helping parents optimize their lives through sustainable health habits.

Philosophy of Eating Like an Adult

One of the core concepts I shared is "Eating Like an Adult", which was the focus of my TEDx talk. This isn't about following the latest diet fads but about understanding and taking ownership of our food choices:

  • The Apple Test: When craving a snack, ask yourself if you'd eat an apple. If not, you might not be hungry but rather seeking comfort or dealing with stress.

  • Treats Are Earned: Regularly consuming the same 'treat' negates its specialness. True treats should be occasional, not daily habits.

Fitness for the Family

As a parent, I've learned the importance of integrating fitness into daily life in a way that's manageable:

  • TNT (Tiny Noticeable Things): Implement small, consistent changes like walking for 10 minutes after meals. These small steps lead to significant lifestyle shifts without overwhelming your schedule.

  • Fitness in Nature: Encouraging outdoor activities not only promotes physical health but also mental well-being. Whether it's a backyard workout or joining a nature play group, being outside can enhance the exercise experience.

Simplicity Over Complexity

In a world full of health trends, I advocate for simplicity:

  • Back to Basics: Focus on what humans have done for millennia - eating seasonal, local foods, and engaging in natural forms of exercise without the need for complex equipment or diets.

  • Health vs. Performance: While performance might require short-term intense strategies, health for longevity is about balance, not extremes.

Upcoming Projects

I'm excited about what's coming in 2025:

  • A Cookbook: A unique blend of nutrition with traditional Indian flavors, perfect for those looking to spice up their health journey.

  • Grip Strength Competition: An internationally sanctioned event right here in Hobart, Tasmania, for those interested in testing and celebrating the often-overlooked strength of our hands.

Thank you to Jessica Franklin for hosting this insightful conversation. If you're a parent looking to make health a priority without adding more stress to your life, this episode is for you.
